The Nike Moon Shoe goes back to the earliest days of Nike. In 1971, co-founder and running coach Bill Bowerman famously experimented with pouring rubber into his wife’s waffle iron, looking for a lighter sole with better grip. The resulting waffle sole became one of Nike’s first major innovations. Early versions were made for runners around the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials, with the tread leaving marks that resembled footprints on the moon—giving the shoe its name.
More than 50 years later, the almost-forgotten silhouette returned to popular attention through Simon Porte Jacquemus. After discovering the Moon Shoe in Nike’s archives, Jacquemus reworked it into a slim fashion sneaker that was first seen on his Spring 2025 runway and released later that year. Its low-to-the-ground proportions arrived at exactly the right moment for the move towards low profile sneakers, bringing one of Nike’s earliest designs back into fashion.
This iteration of the Nike Moon Shoe goes back to the original Nike design rather than the Jacquemus interpretation. A lightweight Baroque Brown nylon upper is paired with leather accents and classic Swoosh branding, while Soft Pearl details and a Gum Light Brown waffle outsole reinforce its distinctly 1970s character. Minimal, slim and uncomplicated, its unisex silhouette is easy to style across wardrobes, from relaxed everyday dressing to more fashion-led looks.
