Nina Simone also wanted to be dipped in the water, but it’s because she’s a Pisces. That may or may not be a joke, I can’t tell, and Miss Simone appears to be very, very drunk during this performance. Like all of the greatest musicians, however, she may not be able to speak coherently, but she can sing, play and dance like someone touched by the muses. She was a classically trained pianist who went into jazz because the world of classical music was too racist; like most Black people of her generation, she had a background in gospel; as a woman of the 60’s, she like folklore and astrology and tribalism. Like the genius that she was, she could shove all of those influences into one song – while apparently being shithammered – and make it all one groove. It’s a signature feature of her 1960’s albums that she skipped and jumped between genres with total confidence, something very few artists of any race or background were bold enough to attempt. Her fierce weirdness probably made her path much harder, both personally and professionally, but it accounts for her enduring relevance and popularity.
